Declutter your Life: A Guide to Filtering Out the Frenzy This Christmas Season
Do you need to declutter your life? Did you know the average mom makes about 35,000 decisions a day? Yep, it’s a nonstop parade of choices—from what’s for breakfast to what’s playing in the car—that can leave us feeling mentally fried. And as the holiday season rolls in, those choices multiply.
But what if, instead of piling on the usual seasonal to-do’s, we tried a different approach? What if you filtered out the clutter and went into the season with just a bit more breathing room? Imagine clearing the calendar, simplifying what your kids watch, and even unsubscribing from half those promo emails. That’s what we’re doing here today: learning to prune away the “meh” to make space for what really matters.
In this post, you’ll learn my top three non-essentials and how to declutter your life to create a season filled with peace, purpose, and a whole lot more mental whitespace. Sound good? Let’s dig in!
1. Declutter Your Calendar Like You Mean It
First things first: the calendar. You know those weekly obligations that just keep happening, whether you’re actually invested in them or not? Or the appointments you said “yes” to that no longer make sense? Turns out, these little commitments could be costing you more energy than you realize.
Research shows that “time clutter”—stuff that eats up time without adding meaning—can lead to an increase in daily stress. Every time you say “yes” to something that isn’t serving your family’s needs or goals, it’s pulling from the peace and presence you could be experiencing instead.
Try This: Give your calendar a ruthless audit. Look for any standing appointments, playdates, or volunteer commitments that no longer align with your priorities. Delete what doesn’t need to be there anymore. Imagine replacing just one of those commitments with a family movie night or a cozy evening baking cookies. How good would that feel?
2. Declutter Kids’ Content
Picture this: you finally sit down with the kids to watch their show, only to be bombarded with chaotic colors, sounds, and storylines that are less than ideal. Kid shows aren’t all bad, but if your little ones have a steady stream of background noise that’s overstimulating or doesn’t align with your family values, it might be time for a content refresh.
Studies show that curated screen time can positively impact kids’ moods and overall behavior, while a constant loop of “background” noise can leave them overstimulated and frazzled. When you take a moment to weed out the noise, you’re actually setting up a calmer space for everyone in the family.
Try This: Take five minutes to log into Netflix (or whatever service your kids use) and curate their content lineup. Delete YouTube entirely if you feel it’s adding more stress than value. And for long car rides, why not swap out the usual movies with a bible based Christmas story? It’s a small change that brings the focus back to faith—and brings peace to your time together.
3. Declutter Your Inbox
Oh, the holiday inbox onslaught. It’s the season for relentless promo emails, sale reminders, and 15% off everything. But if you’re anything like me, you know that instead of making you feel festive, all that inbox clutter can actually make you feel stressed out and distracted.
Good news? You don’t need to keep every promo or newsletter clogging up your inbox. In fact, studies suggest that a regular “unsubscribe” purge can noticeably reduce stress. By cutting down on all those emails, you declutter your life significantly and protect your mental whitespace—one click at a time. 🙌🏻
Try This: Take 10 minutes to unsubscribe from any promo emails or newsletters that no longer bring you value or joy. Keep only the ones that genuinely uplift or inspire you. And think about this: the fewer sales reminders you see, the fewer times you’ll feel the pressure to “add to cart.” Peaceful inbox, peaceful mind. Want more email management tips?
